About Screen Mentoring

Screen Ireland’s Screen Mentoring scheme offers screen professionals structured mentoring support at key stages in their career development across business, creative and/or technical mentoring.

There will be one mentee call per year to support 25 mentees to access mentor support.

Mentoring can work in different ways, depending on the up-skilling requirements, structure, and focus. Applicants may consider the following:

  • Business Mentoring: (emerging or mid-career producers/business owners) A number of meetings/ consultations over a defined period with an established producer or business leader.
  • Creative Mentoring: Different mentoring interventions based on mentee needs and mentor availability, e.g. sounding board and feedback; portfolio/showreel evaluation; career or business development.
  • Technical Mentoring: Focused mentoring to enhance specific technical skills, e.g. one-to-one guidance; honing of career skills; & career development.

How the Scheme Works

The mentor provides practical tailored advice and guidance based on their industry experience, on a one to one basis. Mentors are a confidential sounding board, advising the mentee on key business and professional development issues. Mentors do not act as consultants. They facilitate decision making by helping mentees to come up with their own ideas and actions.

Mentees are assigned a mentor, by the Screen Ireland Funding Schemes panel, and allocated up to 20 hours of mentoring time over a 5-10 meeting assignment, over a 12-month period.

Mentoring can be local or international. Meetings are predominantly face-to-face but can also be online.

The mentor’s fee is covered by Screen Ireland but mentees will have to cover their own expenses such as travel/subsistence.

The Role of the Mentee

Mentees need to come with a very clear idea of their professional need to focus the process – a precise request must be expressed from the outset.

The mentee is expected to drive the partnership by organising meetings (dates and times mindful of the mentor’s schedule and commitments), defining goals and preparing questions to discuss specific topics, identify possibilities and agree actions.

Mentees will be encouraged, challenged and supported by the mentor to learn and grow professionally.

Mentees will be expected to commit to actions and review progress with the mentor through an initial, interim and final report. Excerpts from the Final Report may be published on the Screen Ireland website and social media channels with the prior approval of the mentor and mentee.

Screen Ireland has developed the self-led online Mentoring for Mentees course designed to help prospective mentees to understand the purpose of mentoring and to provide key knowledge and tools for mentees to make the most of their mentoring partnership. To learn more please visit the course page.
