After the collapse of communism in Romania, hundreds of thousands of Saxons, the so-called ethnic Germans from Transylvania, emigrated to Germany. Hans and Maria represent those who remained behind, but the emptiness brought about by their crumbling culture forces them to abandon their home and face the prospects of starting a new life in the West.
