Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to present a special industry masterclass with world-renowned filmmaker Jim Jarmusch taking place at the Irish Film Institute on Friday, 26th January 2024 from 14:00 to 17:00.
Jim Jarmusch is a US-based director, writer, actor and composer. With a career spanning over four decades, his work has been credited with spearheading the American independent film movement and has cemented his status within arthouse cinema as an idiosyncratic and visionary auteur. His filmography includes notable features such as Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Down by Law (1986), Dead Man (1995), Broken Flowers (2005), Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) and Paterson (2016). In addition, he has worked on several other films, appearing on screen on multiple occasions as an actor and as himself. As a composer, he has released three albums with Dutch composer Jozef van Wissem and three EPs with his rock band SQÜRL. His book Some Collages was published by Anthology Editions in 2021.
Jim Jarmusch will be in conversation with Irish filmmaker Lance Daly. Based in Dublin, he has directed seven feature films, and served as writer or producer on many more. Notable titles include Bob Dylan themed festival favourite Kisses (2008), Irish Famine epic Black '47 (2018) and upcoming road movie Trad, which tells the tale of young people confronting the rigid traditions of Ireland's folk music culture. Other titles include low-budget debut Last Days in Dublin (2001), Stephen Rea starrer The Halo Effect (2004), The Good Doctor (2012) starring Orlando Bloom, Riley Keough, J.K Simmons, Michael Pena and Taraji P. Henson, and recession comedy-drama Life's a Breeze (2013). Daly was also a founding member of the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, the Factory Studios in Dublin (now Bow Street Academy), Fastnet Films and Wildcard Distribution.
