  3. Communications to cast and crew regarding Sustainability Policies
  4. Collation of data, formulation of Carbon Calculation and submission for assessment  to Coimisiún na Meáin/ ALBERT
  5. Formulation of Emissions Reduction Report and submission to Screen Ireland.

Executive Summary

The short film production, Linger, took place over 4 shooting days in October 2025 in two locations - a rented house in Killann, County Cavan and the nearby Castle Lakes. The producer is Maria O’Neill, Jump Films. The Sustainability Advisor is Robert Ross Collender.

Owing to the production size and method of filming, this was a production with a relatively low carbon footprint (4.51 tCO2e) and little risk of direct soil, water and habitat damage. The production was largely contained in an energy efficient shooting location, while generator use was avoided for the lakeside location. LED lighting and Ecoflow portable power stations were used by lighting and camera departments. Mains electricity was used for all shooting needs, and some power was provided by solar panels installed at location.

Material purchases were minimal. Crew used their own reusable coffee cups and water bottles. Catering was provided by a local catering company in compostable containers. Documentation was provided in digital format with paper documents only provided on an opt-in basis. Waste was separated into waste streams on site and collected at location by a registered waste management company.

Accommodation for cast and crew was provided at a local hotel. Travel for cast and crew was subsidised by a fuel allowance. Fuel for equipment transport and a gaffer truck was also recorded. Some local taxis were used, mitigated by car-pooling whenever possible. No flights were recorded.

The production was rewarded for its efforts with BAFTA Albert Certification, with an overall score of 62%.

Overview of Sustainability Initiatives Undertaken

Energy

Production Offices

Production office work took place on a work-from-home basis by the Producer and Production Manager and was calculated according to information provided by the production using a benchmark in the Albert Carbon Calculator.

Locations

There were two locations used for this production: a rented house in Killann, Co. Cavan and Castle Lakes, Drumkeery, Co. Cavan. Mains electricity on location was used for all production electrical requirements and heating. A meter reading was taken before and after production for use in the carbon calculator.

Camera and lighting departments used power banks for mobile power needs and LED lights were used throughout.

A diesel generator was intended for use but remained unused as mains power met production needs.

Postproduction

Postproduction was undertaken by Raygun postproduction and on a work-from-home basis by Editors, Sound Designers, Composers etc., and was calculated according to information provided by the production using a benchmark in the Albert Carbon Calculator

Transport

Trucks/Heavy Goods Vehicles

Fuel for 1 Gaffer Truck (€350 diesel) was recorded.

Vans/Light Goods Vehicles

An expense of €250 was recorded for equipment transport.

Buses and Taxis

A log of taxis which were paid for by the production was kept for the purposes of carbon calculation. A total of €345 of taxi transport was recorded, mostly bringing cast and crew to and from the location to their accommodation. Shared taxis were prioritised when logistically feasible.

Personal Transport

A €50 fuel stipend was allocated per crew member- mostly covering the journey from their homes to County Cavan.

Air Travel

No flights were recorded.

Public Transport

Due to the remote location, public transport was not an option for most crew members. Public transport tickets were not a production expense and were not recorded on the carbon calculator.

Catering

Caterer

The production used a local catering business, Foosie, based a short drive from location, to deliver pre-ordered meals to cast and crew at location. In total 150 meals were recorded.

Compostable Packaging

The production specifically requested compostable packaging and all packaging waste was disposed in the compostable waste stream.

Menu choices

The menu choices reflected a good balance of meat and vegetarian dishes and local ingredients were used wherever possible. For the purposes of the carbon calculation, all meals were recorded as chicken dishes- reflecting an average carbon footprint per meal.

Biodiversity

The main location was indoors and shot during daylight hours. As outdoor shooting at the Castle Lakes location took place during daytime, outside nesting season and away from any protected areas, it was deemed that the production followed the requirements of the EU Habitats Directive, the EU Birds Directive and other relevant government policies relating to environmental protection. [S.I. No. 477/2011 - European Communities (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011]. There were no significant risks of disturbances to wildlife and habitats, and no damage caused to natural habitats during production.

Materials

Construction/Props/Set Dec

A Zero Waste Policy was developed in conjunction with the production. No significant set construction was required, nor were any significant quantity of construction materials recorded. Props and set dec prioritised renting and purchasing second hand items before new items. Items which were purchased for the production were either kept for reuse, donated or disposed using the appropriate waste stream.

Costume

A Zero Waste Policy was developed in conjunction with the production, and an Asset Disposal Plan was prepared to plan for the reuse and rehoming of costumes and materials at the end of the production. A total budget of €358 was spent on costumes. Other items used were belonging to cast or purchased and returned. Remaining costumes were stored and disposal quantities were negligible.

Office Supplies

The production department worked from home in prep and post-production and no production offices were required. Office materials and paper were negligible as the production operated largely using digital communications and printed documents were only provided on an opt-in basis. Waste paper materials were disposed of using the appropriate waste stream.

Waste Disposal

A multi-bin system that facilitated segregation was used in accordance with waste laws, food waste regulations and circular economy policies. Separated waste bins were available throughout the shoot location and accompanied by appropriate signage. Wheelie-bin collection provided by Oxigen was available on site.

Results & Outcomes

Albert Certification

The production, in conjunction with the Sustainability Advisor, undertook an Albert Carbon Action Plan. Evidence to support the Carbon Action Plan was collected and submitted to Coimisiún Na Meáin/ BAFTA Albert and accreditation as an ALBERT Certified Production was received. The Carbon Action Plan score was 62%.

Carbon Footprint

Footprint notes

  • The carbon calculations were drawn up using the ALBERT Carbon Calculator tool and have been assessed and verified by Coimisiún na Meáin / ALBERT
  • The scope of the calculations includes only items that were paid for directly by the production.
  • Data is based on data provided by the production to the Sustainability Advisor
  • Data does not include calculations for props, set dec items or construction materials due to limitations in the Albert Carbon Calculator tool and/or insignificant quantities recorded. Some of the data recorded is estimated based on best available data.

Conclusion & Credits

Conclusion

The Producer and Production Manager communicated well with the Sustainability Advisor and provided data for the Carbon Footprint in a timely manner. In general, a sustainability mindset was observed to be well integrated throughout operations, and all industry-standard environmental procedures were followed, resulting in a relatively low-impact production.

Increased impact could be achieved by early engagement with the Sustainability Advisor in pre-production and widespread sustainability training and awareness for crew, production executives and suppliers. Given that this was the first production in which the Producer had engaged a Sustainability Advisor, the process itself acts as a catalyst for awareness and increased integration of sustainability on future productions.
