Documentary Development

Documentary Development

Enable the development of documentary films, with the emphasis on feature-length, creative documentaries capable of reaching an international audience through theatrical and festival exposure.

About the Funding

Documentary Development Loans enable Irish producer and director teams to carry out the concept (including the production of a promo/teaser), research, and story work necessary to prepare a documentary feature film for production.

The maximum amount available for documentary development funding is €15,000. Applicants should note that in light of the pressure on Screen Ireland resources, awards considerably less than the maximum are likely to be offered. Development funding is not a guarantee of Production funding at a later stage.

Development funding is provided by Screen Ireland for the making of films predominantly in English or Irish, or a combination of the two.

Documentary projects aimed at a TV audience and/or the domestic marketplace are NOT eligible.

Who Can Apply

Documentary Development Loans are available to Irish producers (defined as independent production companies registered in the Republic of Ireland which have an office and staff based in the Republic of Ireland) with a documentary feature film they wish to develop. Clear access to the necessary rights in any material that is to be produced, and an agreement (at least in principle) with the director and any contributors must be obtained before an application is submitted.

Application Requirements

In order to thoroughly assess the further development potential of applications the following documents are required:

  • Logline and Synopsis
  • Detailed Treatment (6-10 A4 pages excluding images)
  • Notes on development/execution of the project
  • Development Budget (The Screen Ireland budget template must be used in this section)
