The Secret of Kells Wins Top Award at Edinburgh Film Festival

THE SECRET OF KELLS directed by Tomm Moore and produced by Cartoon Saloon beat off stiff competition to pick up the Audience Award at the Edinburgh Film Festival last weekend.

Producer Paul Young was in Edinburgh to pick up the prestigious prize which was presented by Sir Sean Connery.

Cinema-goers voted for the Irish animated feature ahead of films such as Moon which won the Best New British Feature Film award and Easier With Practice which picked up the Best New International Feature Film Award.

Last years winner Totsi went on to Oscar success while other previous winners include Amelie, Rabbit-Proof Fence and The Buena Vista Social Club.

The Secret of Kells which features the voice talent of Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally it tells the story of an orphan named Brendan who is set the task of completing the Book of Kells.  The task sees him called to a new life of creativity and imagination where adventure, danger and action await him.

The film is having a successful June having picked up the Jury and Audience Awards in Kecskemet in Hungary, the Audience Award in Annecy and receiving a Special Mention at the Zagreb Animation Festival in Croatia.

Produced by European Producers of the Year, Cartoon Saloon, The Secret of Kells received funding from the IFB, BCI, France 2 Cinema, Eurimages, Media programme, Canal+ Cine Cinema, Conseil General de la Charente, Piste Rouge, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Communauté Française de Belgique et des Télédistributeurs Wallons, Promimage and Wallimage.
