Irish documentary The Bass Player selected for Mill Valley Festival in US

The Irish documentary The Bass Player (A Song For Dad) has been selected for the Mill Valley Film Festival in California next month.

The documentary which recently aired on RTE is directed by the San Francisco Irish Film Festival director and Emmy award-winning filmmaker Niall McKay.

In a personal documentary Niall explores his relationship with his Jazz musician father, Jim, who in the 1970s raised his two young sons on his own in Dublin. Scored by Jim's jazz music, this film questions what it means to be a son, a husband and a father.

The Mill Valley Film Festival now in its 32nd year aims to be a celebration of the best in independent and world cinema.  With a reputation as a filmmaker's festival, this prestigious noncompetitive event showcases international features, documentaries, shorts and children's films. Each year, the 11-day Festival sells over 40,000 tickets and welcomes more than 200 filmmakers from around the world.

Produced by Portarlington Multi Media and The Media Factory, The Bass Player received funding from the IFB, the Arts Council and RTE.

The Mill Valley Film Festival takes place 8th - 18th October
