Irish filmmaking talent in the running for Primetime Emmys this weekend

Irish actors Gabriel Byrne and Brendan Gleeson and Irish directors Dearbhla Walsh and Thaddeus O'Sullivan have all been nominated for Primetime Emmys which take place this weekend.

The award winning actor Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter, In Bruges) has received his first Emmy nomination for his performance as Winston Churchill in Into the Storm and is up against accomplished actors Kenneth Branagh, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Kine, Sir Ian McKellen and Kevin Bacon in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries Or A Movie category.

Gabriel Byrne (Jindabyne, Vanity Fair) has received a nomination for the second year running for his role in In Treatment, for which he picked up a Golden Globe earlier this year.  He will face competition from Hugh Laurie (House), John Hamm (Mad Men), Simon Baker (The Mentalist), Michael C. Hall (Dexter) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) for the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award.

Two out of the six nominations in the Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie Or A Dramatic Special category went to Irish directors.  Dearbhla Walsh and Thaddeus O'Sullivan received nominations for their work the BBC drama Little Dorrit and on the HBO drama Into the Storm. Walsh is currently directing episodes of The Tudors for the third year running.

The winners of the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced on Sunday, September 20.
