Irish Shorts Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty and The Door to be shown at unique Oscar Shorts Programme

The two Irish nominated short films GRANNY O’GRIMM’S SLEEPING BEAUTY and THE DOOR will be shown as part of an Oscar programme which will open in select cinemas from 19th February and expand to more than 100 cities in North America and the United Kingdom in subsequent weeks.

Magnolia Pictures and Shorts International will be coming together to screen the Academy Award nominated live-action and animated short films in select cinemas in the US before the award ceremony is held on March 7th.

GRANNY O’GRIMM’S SLEEPING BEAUTY directed by Nicky Phelan and written and performed by Kathleen O’Rourke, is nominated in the Best Short Animation category.  It was produced by Brown Bag Films who were previously nominated in the same category in 2002 for the short GIVE UP YER AULD SINS.  This short has already picked up a host of international awards including Audience Awards at the Omaha Film Festival, US, the Cinegael Festival in Montreal, and at Newport Beach Film Festival in California as well as an IFTA for Best Animation on home ground.

THE DOOR, written and directed by Juanita Wilson and produced by Octagon Films is based on the true story of a father and his young daughter set in Russia 1986.  The film has previously scooped Best Short Film at last year’s IFTAs as well as winning Best Director at the Grand OFF Awards in Warsaw and the Gold Medal Award (Fiction) at the Bilbao International Festival of Documentary and Short Films.

Speaking of this partnership between Magnolia Pictures and Shorts International, Eamonn Bowles, Director of Magnolia said “Up until now, people had very little access to see Academy short nominations before the Academy ceremony.  We’re excited to have the opportunity to showcase these fantastic films while they’re still in contention for the big prize.”
