Granny O’Grimm Continues Success at Cartoons on the Bay in Italy

The Irish short animation Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty scooped the Best Short Film Award and Best Animated Character awards at the Cartoons on the Bay festival which took place in Italy over the weekend.

The Oscar nominated film, directed by Nicky Phelan and written and performed by Kathleen O'Rourke, tells the story of a seemingly sweet old granny who loses the plot as she tells her version of the fairytale to her terrified granddaughter.

Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty has proved hugely successful to audiences both at home and abroad.  As well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Short Animation, it has scooped awards including Audience Awards at Heart of Gold in Australia and Omaha Film Festival in US, an Outstanding Achievement in Short Filmmaking at Newport Beach Festival, and an IFTA for Best Animation.  It has screened at over 30 national and international film festivals to date.

Produced by Darragh O'Connell for Brown Bag Films, it was funded through the Frameworks scheme which is co-financed by the IFB, RTÉ and the Arts Council.

The Irish television series Garth & Bev, and short animations Hasan Everywhere and Donkey were also selected to screen at the Cartoons on Bay festival which took place in Rapello, Italy from 15th-18th April.
