Irish Films Showing at SoGo Dublin Arts Festival this May Bank Holiday Weekend

The first ever SoGo Dublin Arts Festival will take place in Dublin City Centre this weekend with over 60 free events including a special screening of Once in Waltons music store as well as Irish short film screenings across a host of city centre locations.

John Carney's Oscar-winning Once will screen on the opening day of the festival in Waltons music store on Georges Street which was one of the locations used in the film.  Starring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova , this modern-day musical set on the streets of Dublin tells the story of a busker and an immigrant who fall in love over an eventful week, as they write, rehearse and record a number of songs.

Produced by Samson Film and funded by the IFB, Once scooped the Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Falling Slowly'.  The film also won a host of other awards including the Audience Award for World Cinema at Sundance Film Festival, Best Song at the Critics Choice Awards, Best International Film at Raindance Film Festival, London and Best Foreign Film at Independent Spirit Awards, to name but a few.  It went on to receive US distribution by Fox Searchlight taking in over $10 million at the US box office.

A collection of Irish short films will also screen in various bars in the city centre on Saturday.  There will be something there to appeal to all audiences with a mix of comedy, animation and musical shorts on show.

Other events listed on the diverse programme for the weekend include art shows and readings, fashion and food trails, car-boot sales and craft shows, dance troupes and jazz bands and much much more.

Once will screen in Waltons on Georges Street at 5:30pm on Friday 30th April.

Irish short films will screen in Bia Bar, Spy Bar and Le Cirq between 3pm and 9pm on Saturday 1st May.
