Irish Surfing Documentary Waveriders to Show Tonight on BBC1

Joel Conroy's surfing documentary Waveriders will be broadcast tonight 10th May on BBC1 at 10:35pm.

Narrated by Cillian Murphy, the documentary features renowned Irish, British and American surfers Richie Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Kelly Slater and the Malloy brothers.  It tracks the influence of legendary Hawaiian waterman, George Freeth, the son of an Irishman, and the first true soul surfer.  Acknowledging Freeth's legacy, the film returns from Hawaii and the Californian coast to the icy waters of the Irish Atlantic where some of the world's greatest surfers battle to conquer the biggest swell ever to have been ridden off the Irish coast.

The hugely internationally successful documentary has picked up a host of awards since 2008 including the Audience Award at the Dublin International Film Festival, the George Morrison Best Feature Documentary Award at the IFTAs, Best Feature Documentary at the Beloit Film Festival in Illinois, Best Sport Documentary at the Celtic Film Festival and Best Documentary Award at the 2009 Surfer Poll & Video Awards in Los Angeles.  It was also named best Irish film of 2009 by the Dublin Film Critics Circles.

Waveriders was produced by Margo Harkin for Inis Films and was co-financed by IFB, BCI, Northern Ireland Screen, BBC NI, EU/Interreg IIIA, ICBAN.  It was the highest grossing Irish film in cinemas last year.

Catch Waveriders tonight Monday 10th May on BBC1 at 10:35pm.
