First Ever Indian Film Festival of Ireland to Take Place in Dublin

The first ever Indian Film Festival of Ireland (IFFI) will be taking place at the Swan Cinema in Rathmines, Dublin next week from Friday 25th-28th June.

The IFFI aims to celebrate the presence and increase the potential of Indian film in Ireland by introducing Indian films to Irish audiences.

In addition to the wide selection of Indian films screening over the four days of the festival, the programme includes discussion forums, seminars, public interviews with leading directors from the Indian film industry, workshops, and cultural and entertainment events.

The opening night will showcase Rajneeti, the much-awaited drama about Indian politics, democracy and elections, which captures a country in turmoil in a powerful yet moving film about India's struggle.  The film will be introduced by the film's director, Prakash Jha, who has previously made acclaimed films like Daamul, Mrityudand and Gangajal.

There will be 22 films screening in total including Summer 2007, directed by Suhail Tatari and Life Goes On, the debut film from director Sangeeta Dutta, both of whom will be in attendance to introduce their films.  Indian film and dialogue writer Atul Tiwari will be conducting various film seminar sessions and workshops related to screenplay writing.

The Indian Cinema Cultural will also be hosting several seminars during the festival to address the global nature of Bollywood films, exploring the role of the film and the culture that shapes this phenomenon.  The seminars are:

  • The Economy of the Cinema India/Ireland -  Saturday 26th June
  • Cinema Symposium Bollywood Unbound - Sunday 27th June
  • Master Class on Directing  - Monday 28th June

A charity gala dinner will also take place in the Hilton Hotel, Dublin 2 on Saturday 26th June with live semi-classical dance performance by Dr. Tilottama Nandy and a short presentation by Siraj Zaidi, the director and founder of the film festival.  Proceeds from this will go to an orphanage in New Delhi, India.

The Indian Film Festival of Ireland takes place at the Swan Cinema, Rathmines, Dublin 6 from Friday 25th-28 June.
