The Secret of Kells to Screen at IFI Family Festival this week

There will be plenty of fun for all the family at the IFI Family Festival with a host of films screening for young film fans, including a special open-air screening of the Oscar nominated The Secret of Kells in Temple Bar this weekend. 

The Irish animation The Secret of Kells features the voice talent of Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally, and tells the story of an orphan named Brendan who is set the task of completing The Book of Kells, calling him to a new life of creativity and imagination.

Produced by Cartoon Saloon, the animation has picked up a host of awards including the Jury and Audience Awards in Kecskemet in Hungary, the Audience Award in Annecy, and Best European Feature at the British Animation Awards. It was also nominated for Best Feature Animation at both the prestigious Annie Awards and the Academy Awards® this year.

The Secret of Kells was financed by the IFB, BAI, France 2 Cinema, Eurimages, Media programme, Canal+ Cine Cinema, Conseil General de la Charente, Piste Rouge, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Communauté Française de Belgique et des Télédistributeurs Wallons, Promimage and Wallimage.

There are plenty of fun events lined up for the six day programme with an interactive event Synth Eastwood kick-starting the festival and screenings of Mia and the Migoo, Little Roberts and Toy Story 3 in the following days. The workshops taking place include a 3-day practical course in how to make a short documentary, aimed at children between 9 and 12 years, a lesson in Flickbooks; bringing animation to life with the flick of a thumb, as well as creating your own comic strip.

The IFI Family Festival is run in association with Temple Bar Cultural Trust The Summer Sensational and takes place from the 5th-11th July.

The open-air screening of The Secret of Kells takes place at 10pm on Saturday 10th July.
