Back by Popular Demand: Colony Screening in Light House Cinema

Following its successful cinema release last month, Colony, the debut documentary co-directed by Ross McDonnell and Carter Gunn, is to have a limited run in the Light House Cinema, beginning this weekend from Saturday 7th August.

Colony documents a time of unprecedented crisis in the world investigating the unexplainable phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder which has left landscapes of empty beehives all across America, which consequentially threatens our food supply.

This beautifully photographed film is told through the eyes of both veteran beekeeper, David Mendes, and Lance and Victor Seppi, two young brothers getting into beekeeping when most are getting out. Capturing the struggle within the beekeeping  community, as Mendes tries to save the nation's collapsing hives while the Seppi's try to keep their business alive amidst a collapsing economy, the film combines an urgent environmental issue with a gripping real-life drama.

Colony premiered at the renowned Toronto Film Festival last year and has since been widely praised on the festival circuit, winning the First Appearance Award at the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival. It has also been officially selected for screening at festivals including the Doc Aviv Festival in Israel, the Warsaw Film Festival, Poland, the Green Film Fest in Seoul, South Korea, the Kiev Film Festival in Ukraine, the Cinemabiente Environmental Film Festival, Italy, the Rodos Film Festival, Greece, the Sydney Film Festival, the Sarajevo Film Festival, Bosnia and will be screening at the Lemesos Documentary Film Festival in Cyprus later this week.

Produced by Macdara Kelleher and Morgan Bushe for Fastnet Films, the documentary was funded by the IFB/BSÉ.

Saturday, August 7          4.10pm
