Oscar Nominated Irish film 'The Secret of Kells' Hits UK Cinemas this Weekend

The Academy Award® nominated THE SECRET OF KELLS directed by Tomm Moore is set for release in cinemas all across the UK this weekend from Saturday 2nd October.

The feature animation tells the story of young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide.  It features the voice talent of Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally.

Co-directed by Nora Twomey and produced by Paul Young for Cartoon Saloon, the film has scooped a variety of awards including the Jury and Audience Awards in Kecskemet in Hungary, the Audience Award in Annecy, and Best European Feature at the British Animation Awards. It was also nominated for Best Feature Animation at both the prestigious Annie Awards and the Academy Awards® earlier this year.

THE SECRET OF KELLS  was financed by the IFB, BAI, France 2 Cinema, Eurimages, Media programme, Canal+ Cine Cinema, Conseil General de la Charente, Piste Rouge, Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Communauté Française de Belgique et des Télédistributeurs Wallons, Promimage and Wallimage.

Critics have quoted the film as ..."Four Stars! Ravishing! Magical! Glorious!" from the Los Angeles Times, "... discloses strange new vistas that nonetheless seem to have existed since ancient times" from the New York Times and "A Tour-de-Force! Absolutely luscious to behold!"  commented Variety.
