Newest Round of Virtual Cinema Shorts to Premiere at Darklight Film Festival

Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board is delighted to announce that the latest showcase of Virtual Cinema short films will be premièring at the Darklight Film Festival on Friday 29th October in The Grand Social in Dublin.

This is the third round of the digital short film scheme which aims to encourage the exploration of fresh filmmaking, using innovative and original techniques but can hold the attention of the YouTube audience. This year's selected nine shorts are a diverse assortment of comedy and humour mixed with a bit of revenge and retribution...

The Invention of the Lightbulb, directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Changes) and produced by Brunella Cocchiglia investigates how Edison got his bright idea while The Fly & the Monk written and directed by Matthew Darragh (Pilgrim, Dublin 1) and produced by Sean Smith follows a contented monk trying to relax under a shady tree on a peaceful summer's day.

The light-hearted Special Ed, written and directed by Hugh Travers and produced by Claire McCaughley for Rubicon Films (My Brothers, The Running Mate) concerns two parents who fret over the lack of services available to their son who has an unusual disability.  Ivan McMahon's darkly comic TV Dinner muses mankind's somewhat dubious position at the top of the food chain, while his second project The Irish Dog Whisperer shows a couple who get more than they bargained for when they enlist the help of the Irish dog whisperer!

Daylight Saving Time, produced and directed by Jason Butler and written by Jason and Brendan Butler, tells the story of Mark's wife who was killed due to corporate negligence and on the night the clocks go back, he takes his revenge. Vincent Gallagher's Signs proves that there is magic in what we see every day, sometimes you just have to look hard enough.

The hilarious Spanx & Eve, from Tonyia Dowling, reveals the secrets of bridal underwear with all its pain, sweat, frustration and tears while Ol' One Eye, written and directed by Brian Folan and produced by Joanne Cunningham, follows an old man who discovers his new prosthetic eye is not what it seems!

From magic to monks; from spanx to spying glass eyes, there is really something here to suit everyone's tastes!
