IFB Media Hub shortlisted for Digital Media Award while two IFB-funded short films also get the nod
BSÉ/IFB has been shortlisted for the Online Entertainment Award for the Media Hub http://www.thisisirishfilm.ie/ while two IFB funded shorts, Vincent Gallagher's ‘Signs' and Richard Kelly's ‘Paperman', have both been shortlisted for Best Use of Film or Animation Award at this year's Digital Media Awards which will take place next month.
Established in 2003, the Digital Media Awards were created to raise awareness of the emerging digital media sector in Ireland. Engineered to honour creative excellence in the digital space in Ireland, they also offer a platform for the dynamic work of companies, third and second level institutions, across the broad spectrum of categories in digital media.
The Media Hub, which was launched last year, hosts the IFB Short Film Channel with over 120 shorts, together with a wide range of Irish film trailers, podcasts and latest Irish film industry news. You can find the most recent Irish Box Office figures, a talent strand promoting up and coming Irish stars, directors and film talent working in Ireland as well as useful information dedicated to people interested in entering the industry and much more. The site had over 21,000 unique visitors in its first year of existence and is constantly being updated so there is always something new to discover.
‘Signs', the short film written and directed by Vincent Gallagher, proves that there is magic in what we see every day; sometimes you just have to look hard enough. The film was financed by the IFB Virtual Cinema digital short film scheme and had its première at the Darklight Film Festival last October.
Short animation ‘Paperman', directed by Richard Kelly and co-written by Richard and Sean Ryan, tells of a paper man's quest for love to find his paper girl. The film premiered at the 2010 Galway Film Fleadh and was produced by Jessica Kelly for Prickly Pear Productions through the Frameworks scheme. Frameworks is a joint initiative between IFB, RTÉ and the Arts Council.
The Media Hub will be competing against other online initiatives including BetBidder.com (Continuum Technologies), Dragon's Den (EightyTwenty Interactive), Coors Light - Journey (CKSK), Heineken Music (CKSK), Oxegen (CKSK), Movies.ie (Movies.ie) and RTÉ Sports - GAA Social TV (EightyTwenty Interactive) in the Online Entertainment Award which looks at how new and emerging online entertainment platforms and trends are being used in a creative fashion.
Meanwhile ‘Signs' and ‘Paperman' will compete against ‘Audi' (Agency.com), ‘Milk It For All Its Worth' (Agency.com) and ‘Invincible' (Design Partners) for Best Use of Film or Animation, which demonstrates exceptional creativity and originality, whether 2D or 3D, computer animation or flash animation, for games, for web or mobile platforms. Past IFB recipients of this award include Andrew Kavanagh's ‘Hasan Everywhere' and Cathal Gaffney's ‘Ding Dong Denny's History of Ireland'.
The Digital Media Awards will take place on Friday 11th February at the Convention Centre in Dublin.
