Optimum Releasing Nabs the Rights to Cartoon Saloon's New Animation 'Song of the Sea'
Tomm Moore's latest animation feature SONG OF THE SEA has just secured distribution rights in Ireland and the UK with Optimum Releasing.SONG OF THE SEA tells the story of the last Seal Child's journey home. After their mother's disappearance, Ben and Saoirse are sent to live with Granny in the city. When they resolve to return to their home by the sea, their journey becomes a race against time as they are drawn into a world Ben knows only from his mother's folktales. But this is no bedtime story; these fairy folk have been in our world far too long. It soon becomes clear to Ben that Saoirse is the key to their survival.
Directed and animated by Tomm Moore, SONG OF THE SEA was co-written with Will Collins, whose feature debut My Brothers was selected to screen at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival last year.
The film is currently in development and will be produced by the Oscar nominated team at Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, Skunk Fu!) with the Kilkenny-based studio providing designs, layouts, backgrounds, the first 20 minutes of animation, storyboarding and scene illustrations. It is to be co-produced by Noerlum Studios (Denmark), Big Farm (Belgium) with post-production and music being completed by Super Productions (France). It received funding from the IFB/BSÉ and MEDIA.
It is set to be an exciting month ahead for Tomm, having received an invitation alongside fellow Irish Oscar-nominated animator and director Nicky Phelan (Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty, Give Up Yer Aul Sins) from the White House to attend the St. Patrick's Day celebrations planned there later this week.
