Irish Doc 'Dreaming The Quiet Man' to have International Premiere in New York this Weekend
Sé Merry Doyle's feature documentary Dreaming The Quiet Man, produced by Loopline Films, will receive its international premiere at MoMA in New York on the 21st May 2011.
Gabriel Byrne is curating a major event, Revisiting The Quiet Man: Ireland on FIlm, which will explore the lasting impact the film has had in Ireland and abroad. He is curating this with the Irish Film Institute as part of Culture Ireland's year-long Imagine Ireland initiative. Dreaming the Quiet Man will feature during the event at this unique screening at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The film will be introduced by Gabriel Byrne and producer Vanessa Gilde will also travel to New York to attend.
The documentary features an exclusive interview with Maureen O' Hara, who gives us a powerful insight into the director John Ford and her co-star John Wayne and tells us the film was a "love letter to Ireland". Martin Scorsese explains how The Quiet Man influenced his film Raging Bull and Peter Bogdanovich talks about John Ford's obsession with his Irish identity. Jim Sheridan suggests that in Ireland the film can be unfairly criticized for stage Irishness while he believes it is a far more subtle and intelligent film than that . Some of the original extras from the film tell stories, like how John Ford brought electricity to the sleepy village of Cong. The documentary is rich in visual landcapes from the West of Ireland and Monument Valley, the scene of so many of Ford's westerns and is narrated by Gabriel Byrne. Dreaming The Quiet Man will go on general release in Ireland in August.
Dreaming The Quiet Man was co-funded by BSÉ/IFB, TG4 and BAI.
