A Special Exhibition of Ireland on Film Takes Place in the Museum of Modern Art New York
A new exhibition exploring representations of Irish identity in cinema is taking place in The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York this week. Revisiting The Quiet Man: Ireland on Film presented by MoMA and the Irish Film Institute (IFI), kicked off on Friday with a
screening of John Ford's classic film The Quiet Man.
The exhibition which is curated by Gabriel Byrne features 14 films all of which present alternative depictions of Ireland on screen and provides a multifaceted view of America's complex cinematic relationship with the Irish.
Highlights of the exhibition include Ken Loach's Palme d'Or winning historical drama The Wind That Shakes The Barley; John Ford's Academy Award winning The Informer (1935), Jim Sheridan's biographical film In The Name Of The Father (1993), Peter Mullan's The Magdalene Sisters (2002), winner of the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion Award and the recent urban
drama Kisses (2008).
Revisiting the Quiet Man: Ireland on Film is curated by Gabriel Byrne and is presented by the Museum of Modern Art and Irish Film Institute as part of Imagine Ireland: a year of Irish arts in America, an initiative of Culture Ireland. This exhibition is facilitated by Charles Silver, Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art; Sunniva O'Flynn, Curator, Irish Film Institute; and Sarah Glennie, Director, Irish Film Institute.
