Irish Film Board and Irish Consulate host reception in LA for Irish Oscar nominees

Bord Scannan na hEireann/ the Irish Film Board and the Irish Consulate in Los Angeles co-hosted a dinner reception last Friday 27th honouring the Irish hopefuls at this year’s Oscars. Jim Sheridan’s IN AMERICA was nominated for three awards, amongst them the coveted Best Original Screenplay. Jim Sheridan and his daughters and fellow nominees Kirsten and Naomi all attended the dinner in Los Angeles along with representatives involved in CHERNOBYL HEART, the Best Short Documentary nominee.

“Its been a wonderful year for Irish cinema. These Oscar nominations are further confirmation of the quality of Irish filmmaking. The Irish Film Board congratulates Jim and his colleagues at Hell’s Kitchen for their faith in the local industry”, said Mark Woods, CEO of Bord Scannan na hEireann/the Irish Film Board. “They keep making pictures here, when they can make them anywhere. I like to think that’s because our cast, crews and locations are recognised as some of the best in the world”.

IN AMERICA is nominated in the Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay categories. In addition, CHERNOBYL HEART, nominated for the Best Short Documentary is another Oscar contender flying the flag for Ireland. This powerful and evocative film is the result of a collaboration between Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children's Project and US independent filmmaker Maryann Deleo.

The dinner was co-hosted by Ireland’s national film agency, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/The Irish Film Board and the Irish Consular General, Donal Denham.

The celebration was part of a wider Irish Film Board trade mission to promote the Irish film industry, including the recent improvements to the tax incentive for film production, Section 481. The Irish Film Board targeted the U.S. Studios, independent producers, distributors, as well as the Motion Picture Association of America to ensure that Ireland maintains its high ranking as a preferred location for Hollywood production.
