BLOODY SUNDAY wins Best Director and Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards

Bloody Sunday, directed by Paul Greengrass which recounts the event of the January 30, 1972 civil rights march in Derry, has won Best Director and Best Film at the British Independent Film Awards.

Paul Greengrass faced stiff competition from the other nominees who included cult British directors Lynne Ramsay for her new film Morvern Callar and Ken Loach for Sweet Sixteen.

James Nesbitt also fought off strong competition from Richard Harris (My Kingdom), Bill Nighy (The Lawless Heart) and Timothy Spall (All or Nothing).

Created in 1998, these Awards were set up to recognise the growing stature of the British Independent Film Industry in the UK and worldwide.

Bloody Sunday was produced by Hell's Kitchen in association with Bord Scannán Na hÉireann, Granada Films and Portman Films Ltd.
