BSE/IFB BACKS NEIL JORDAN’S NEW FILM
Scheduled for a September shoot, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is a collaboration between Bord Scannan na hEireann /Irish Film Board , Pathe Pictures Limited, Parallel Films and Number 9 Films.BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is a vibrant black comedy from NEIL JORDAN, the award winning director of THE CRYING GAME, INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE, THE END OF THE AFFAIR and THE BUTCHER BOY.
Set in the 1970’s, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO follows the exploits of PATRICK BRADEN, an endearing, witty, clever and deceptively tough young transvestite. The product of a liaison between the parish priest and his housekeeper, he is abandoned as a baby and is raised by a foster mother in the small Irish town of Tyreelin.
Aware from a very early age that he has been born into the wrong body, PATRICK survives this harsh environment with the aid of his wit and charm, plus a sweet refusal to let anyone and anything change who he is. With a burning desire to find his mother and reconciliation, he moves to London, and a hilarious, memorable and emotional series of misadventures sees PATRICK, or KITTEN as he prefers to be called, finally finding the love and happiness he so craves and deserves.
Jordan weaves a wonderfully surreal and magical tale to bring us this funny, moving and poignant rites of passage account of a young man enduring the trials and tribulations he faces with a smile and unwavering faith in the inherent goodness in us all.
Loosely based on Pat McCabe’s best-selling novel of the same name BREAKFAST ON PLUTO is the second writing collaboration between Jordan and McCabe. The producers are Alan Moloney (INTERMISSION), Stephen Woolley (THE CRYING GAME, INTERMISSION, THE END OF THE AFFAIR), and Neil Jordan.
Cillian Murphy, who most recently appeared in Pathe’s A GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (BATMAN BEGINS, INTERMISSION, 28 DAYS LATER, COLD MOUNTAIN) will play the lead role.
“We are thrilled to be involved in Neil’s latest project. With the Oscar winning director and new star Cillian Murphy, it really does promise to be an exciting Irish film”, said Mark Woods, CEO of BSE/IFB.
