Irish /US Documentary Mea Maxima Culpa Silence in the House of God secures early Emmy win
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have named the juried winners for the 65th Emmy® Awards in the categories of animation, documentary making, and costumes for a variety program or special.
The documentary film MEA MAXIMA CULPA SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD, directed by Oscar winning director Alex Gibney, with support from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/ the Irish Film Board (IFB) has won an Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking.
There are no nominees for the juried awards. The juried categories are screened by a panel, which has the option of rewarding any number of Emmys to the eligible contenders. Unanimous approval from the panel is required before an award can be handed out.
The win comes in addition to the documentary receiving five other nominations in the following categories, Outstanding Writing For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Directing For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Music Composition For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special (Original Dramatic Score). Winners of which will be announced on the evening of the awards in September.
Filmed in Ireland, the US, and Italy and shot by Lisa Rinzler and Irish Documentary filmmaker Ross McDonnell (Colony), MEA MAXIMA CULPA SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD explores the charged issue of abuse within the Catholic Church, following a trail from the first known protest against clerical abuse in the United States and all way to the Vatican. The film has already generated much international buzz, having been shortlisted for an Academy Award this year, it also picked up the Grierson Award for Best Documentary at the BFI London Film Festival in October 2012, along with its premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.
MEA MAXIMA CULPA SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD is produced by Jigsaw Productions, Wider Film Projects and Below the Radar Films. Trevor Birney and Ruth O'Reilly were the producers for Below the Radar Films.
The award will be presented to the filmmakers at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremony which takes place on September 15 at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre.
