Ireland’s first VFX & Animation Summit on now

Speakers have worked on international blockbusters like
Gravity, Man of Steel, Ender’s Game and Iron Man 3

Multi award-winning international visual effects practitioners from the US, Canada and the UK are in Dublin this week to participate in the very first Irish VFX & Animation Summit.

The two-day event will comprise a film screening, a full day of talks, presentations and panel discussions, as well as recent work showcases presented by local VFX & Animation companies and VFX & Animation software demos.

Supported by Screening Training Ireland (part of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board) and Enterprise Ireland, the VFX & Animation Summit aims to bring together the flexible and convergent VFX, Animation and Games community to encourage skillset growth and industry awareness, and act as a catalyst for the development of a sustainable Visual Effects and Animation industry in Ireland.

Speaking about the event, Teresa McGrane, Deputy Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, said, “Bord Scannán na hÉireann is delighted to support the inaugural Irish VFX & Animation Summit. The Irish animation industry has already established a strong international reputation, and the Irish VFX industry, while at an earlier stage, is making its mark with international film and TV drama projects such as Lockout, Game of Thrones, The Last Days on Mars and Ripper Street.  This event is a unique forum in which to explore the highly specialised artistic and technical skills that link the animation, VFX and games industries, and a wonderful opportunity for local industry to hear from top international visual effects talent and discuss international growth opportunities for the sector.”

The event will see attendees engaged in many areas of the VFX & Animation pipeline and all will get a first-hand chance to engage directly with the award-winning speakers and global leaders in their field.

The Summit seeks to provide a platform and forum for open discussion, as well as a networking opportunity between key international talent, local industry, and students from film, animation, visual effects, games and computer science backgrounds. The goal is to encourage growth in current and future skillsets with a view to developing the burgeoning visual effects industry in Ireland and ensuring Ireland’s VFX talent has what it takes to make blockbusting images worthy of the world stage. This will help those working in the sector in Ireland to secure more opportunities within this increasingly important part of the film and television industry.

Ireland has emerged as a top international player in animation in recent years, and the Summit provides an opportunity to showcase this position. Irish VFX talent punches well above its weight internationally, and the Summit aims to tap into the considerable talents of this diaspora, in order to enable growth back home in the local industry. Irish speakers at the Summit include William Sargent, Co-Founder/CEO, Framestore; Des Carey, Partner/VP, Light Iron (LA); and Gavin Graham, Co-Head of CG, Double Negative.
