IRISH DOCUMENTARY RECEIVES NOMINATION FOR GRIERSON AWARD
BSÉ/IFB -backed documentary BATTLE OF THE BOGSIDE, produced and directed by Vinny Cunningham, has been nominated for a GRIERSON AWARD in the Best Historical Documentary category.The documentary tells the story of the 1969 riots in Derry where the disaffected Catholic population of the Bogside took to the streets in the wake of a Protestant Apprentice Boys parade in the City.The riots continued for three days and ended when British troops were deployed, a decision that was to shape the future of Northern Ireland for over thirty years.
The Grierson Awards are amongst the most prestigious awards available to documentaries. Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board-backed documentary CHAVEZ-INSIDE THE COUP, produced by Power Pictures was named ‘Best International Documentary’ and ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Grierson Awards in London in 2003.
