IFB shorts to screen as part of Culture Night 2014.
A number of short films funded under Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board’s short films schemes will screen in various locations around the country this evening (19 September) as part of Culture Night 2014.
From 6pm this evening, the Light House Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin will screen four IFB funded shorts; Rúbaí, about a young girl who declares herself to be an atheist ahead of her first Holy Communion; Ghost Train, a story about two estranged brothers who make a pilgrimage to the fairground where their friend went missing; The Missing Scarf, an animated short narrated by Star Trek actor George Takei and Coda, about a drunken lost soul who meets Death.
The Irish Film Institute in Temple Bar, Dublin will screen a number of family-friendly shorts from 6.30pm. Amongst those will be a number of IFB funded shorts including the Academy Award®-nominated New Boy, based on a short story by Roddy Doyle; Cúilín Dúalach, an animation about a boy born with his head on backwards; Useless Dog, a witty documentary focussing on an inept but lovable farm dog and Fear of Flying, an animated short about a bird with a fear of flying who tries to avoid going south in winter.
Meanwhile in Limerick, the Royal Cinema will screen 2 hours of free films from 8pm, amongst which will be Rúbaí. Over in Tipperary, Cashel Library will again screen the popular short film Rúbaí and The Missing Scarf in addition to the following shorts: Analogue People in a Digital Age, a short documentary on eight men who fight to stay relevant on the day of the analogue to digital TV switchover; The End of the Counter, a documentary on the moment in 1965 when grocery shopping changed forever; Irish Folk Furniture, an animated tale bringing new life to Irish farmhouse furniture and A Film From My Parish - 6 Farms, which tells six stories by six farmers in one parish.
Events which take place during Culture Night are free and has grown from a small scale cultural event held only in Dublin in 2006 to being the national cultural event it is now, with over 350,000 people participating across the country.
