The film was shot over six years and charted Mark’s highs, lows and his unrelenting courage in the face of adversity. Mark became blind at the age of 22 after suffering detached retinas. Despite this setback, he partook in ultra endurance races across deserts and mountains, eventually becoming the first blind person to race to the South Pole in 2008. The psychological impact of that victory enabled Mark to put his blindness behind him and move on with his life and he become engaged to his girlfriend Simone. However tragedy struck again. Only four weeks before the wedding in July 2010, Mark suffered a fall from a second-story window and suffered paralysis after breaking his back, sending his life into turmoil once again.
Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock Story is produced by True Films and was financed by Bord Scannán na hÉireann, RTÉ and REHAB. The film will have several screenings on an Irish tour over the coming weeks, many of which will be attended by Ross Whitaker and Mark Pollock. You can read the full list of screenings here.
