Irish Productions Frank, Calvary Receive Multiple Nominations at BIFA

The nominations for the MOËT British Independent Film Awards 2014 have been announced, with Irish co-productions Frank and Calvary receiving multiple nominations. Irish talent including Lenny Abrahamson, Brandan Gleeson, Michael Fassbender, Andrew Scott, Stephen Rennicks and Robbie Ryan have all received nominations.

Frank, released in May and directed by Lenny Abrahamson, received five nominations. These were for Best Director (Lenny Abrahamson), Best Screenplay (Jon Ronson, Peter Straughan), Best Supporting Actress (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Best Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender) and Best Technical Achievement (Stephen Rennicks – Music). Frank was produced by Element Pictures and Runaway Fridge Films and financed by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB), Film 4, BFI and Protagonist Pictures.

Speaking on the nomination, Abrahamson commented that “I’m delighted for everyone involved in Frank that it’s getting such an endorsement from the BIFA and honored to be nominated for Best Director.”

Frank was produced by Element Pictures and Runaway Fridge Films, producers are Ed Guiney, David Barron and Stevie Lee. Executive producers are Tessa Ross, Katherine Butler and Andrew Lowe. Frank was financed by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB), Film 4, BFI and Protagonist Pictures.

Calvary, which was released in April and directed by John Michael McDonagh, has received four nominations. These were for Best Film, Best Director (John Michael McDonagh), Best Screenplay (John Michael McDonagh) and Best Actor (Brendan Gleeson). Calvary was produced by Octagon Films and Reprisal Films and was financed by the IFB, BFI, Aver Media and LipSync Post. Producers were James Flynn, Chris Clark and Flora Fernandez Marengo.

Other Irish nominees include Andrew Scott, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Pride, in addition to Robbie Ryan, who was nominated for Best Technical Achievement – Cinematography for Catch Me Daddy.

The 2014 BIFA event will be held on Sunday 7 December in London.
