Irish Shorts to hit big screen as part of Bulmers Comedy Festival

UGC Cinemas in conjunction with MCD, The Irish Film Board and Network Ireland Television, announced details today of “Canned Laughter” - a season of Irish comedy short films, which will run everyday from Sept 17 - 23rd exclusively at UGC Parnell Street, Dublin 1, in association with this year’s Bulmers International Comedy Festival (Sept. 12th - 26th).

The Season consists of a collection of individual comedy shorts, which run together as a 90-minute stand-alone feature. Canned Laughter includes titles such as Yu Ming is Ainm Dom, (just back from the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal), Agricultural Report (which will be attached to all release prints of Morgan Spurlock’s fast-food documentary - Super Size Me - at cinemas from 10 September), Waterloo Dentures, No No No and Flying Saucer Rock ’n’ Roll. “Canned Laughter” brings together some of Ireland’s well known comedic directors and actors. Comedy talents include Barry Murphy, Michael McElhatton, Ardal O’Hanlon and Kevin Gildea.

This is the first time that a special package of short comedy films by Irish writers/directors has been selected to play at a major Dublin cinema. The Season provides a unique opportunity for Irish cinema-goers to see the best of recent Irish comedy shorts, many of which have won substantial awards on the international circuit.

"We are delighted to showcase the ‘Canned Laughter’ season on the big screen as part of the Bulmers Comedy Festival” says Emer McEvoy of UGC “It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to adding variety and diversity to our programming of the 17-screen cinema.”

Derry O’Brien of Network Ireland Television says “People will be really surprised at the strength of these films, some of which are classic mini comedies. The Bulmers International Comedy Festival provides a fantastic opportunity to see this multi-award winning selection of Irish shorts. We hope to issue a DVD of the best of these Irish comedy shorts for Christmas this year.”

Noel McHale of MCD says “Canned Laughter adds another dimension to Bulmers Comedy Festival and is a rare opportunity to see all these award winning classics on the big screen. Canned Laughter at UGC is set to be a festival highlight.”
