Don’t Miss ‘One Million Dubliners’, Screening on RTÉ1 on Thursday, November 20th
Don't miss One Million Dubliners, a documentary exploring the necropolis of Glasnevin Cemetery, which makes its television debut on Thursday November 20th when it screens on RTÉ1 at 10:15pm. The film was very well received by critics following its recent run in Irish cinemas.
In a four-star review, Donald Clarke of The Irish Times described Glasnevin Cemetery as "a subject that was crying out for full cinematic examination" and the film as "a dauntingly comprehensive and beautifully filmed work." RTÉ Ten described the film as "Moving, tactful, and confident about conveying the air of mystery at the heart of the film" and noted the film "has a quiet majesty and lingers long after viewing." Entertainment.ie described it as an "eye-opening, entertaining documentary" and praised the "gorgeous cinematography".
One Million Dubliners was directed by Aoife Kelleher, produced by Rachel Lysaght for Underground Films and funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board. The resting place of 1.5 million souls, the film reveals the often unspoken stories of ritual, loss, love, redemption, emotion, history - and the business of death. But this is really a film about life: the Saint Valentine's Day rush in the florists; the American visitors eagerly searching for Irish ancestors; lost and longed for love; discovery and bereavement; earthy gravediggers and musicians in celebration. Above all, it's the story of an immensely engaging Tour Guide shepherding his charges - and us - through the headstones and monuments, through opinions and beliefs. Filled with the familiar and the fascinating, this is a documentary that offers a glimpse into the unknown, into a world we will all come to share.
