Irish Cinema is Celebrated at the Boston Irish Film Festival Beginning Today

The Boston Irish Film Festival kicks off today, with a great choice of films funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board amongst the line-up.

The festival opens with Niall Heery’s Gold, which has won the award for Best Feature at the festival. Heery will attend the screening of the film, which stars David Wilmot (Calvary), James Nesbitt (Bloody Sunday), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Kate Condon (Rome).

Another award-winner at the festival is One Million Dubliners, which was given the Directors Choice award. The acclaimed documentary focuses on the necropolis of Glasnevin Cemetery and the screening will be attended by director Aoife Kelleher and producer Rachel Lysaght.

Other IFB-funded films screening at the festival include Irish-language feature An Bronntanas, the winner of the Special Jury Prize at the festival, documentary Blood Fruit which examines the Dunnes Stores strikers of the 1980s, The Guarantee starring Peter Coonan which focuses on the Bank Guarantee of 2008 and The Legend of Longwood, a fantasy directed by Lisa Mulcahy.

 A selection of IFB-funded shorts will also screen at the festival, including Irish-language shorts Rúbaí and Céad Ghrá, Cutting Grass starring John Hannah, animated short Deadly with the voices of Peter Coonan and Brenda Fricker, Roy Keane biopic Rockmount and animation Tea With the Dead with the voice of Frank Kelly.
