John Boorman’s Queen and Country is Released in Irish Cinemas from June 12th

Queen and Country, the latest feature film from renowned filmmaker John Boorman, will be released in Irish cinemas this Friday, June 12th.

Queen and Country made its debut at Directors Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. The film is a semi-autobiographical feature which serves as the sequel to Boorman’s 1987 film Hope and Glory, which was nominated for five Academy Awards® including Best Picture and Best Director.

Queen and Country takes place in 1952. Bill Rohan is eighteen years old, dreaming his life away at the family’s riverside home, waiting to be called up for two years’ conscription in the British Army. His idyll is shattered by the harsh realities of boot camp. He meets Percy, an amoral prankster; they are rivals and antagonists, but they gradually forge a deep friendship in the claustrophobic environment of a closed, prison-like training camp. The pressure is briefly relieved by excursions into the outside world, where they both fall in love. Finally, Bill is confronted with the shattered lives of wounded boys returning from Korea.

Boorman is the acclaimed director of The General, Deliverance, Excalibur and many other classic films. Queen and Country stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class), Callum Turner (Viktor Frankenstein), David Thewlis (the Harry Potter series), Pat Shortt (Calvary), Brian F O’Byrne (Jimmy’s Hall), Tamsin Egerton (Love, Rosie), Richard E Grant (Withnail and I) and Sinéad Cusack (V for Vendetta).

Queen and Country has been warmly received by critics. Time Out New York praised it as “a moving portrait of a nation that couldn’t account for all it had lost in a war that it won.”  Paste Magazine noted that “After so long, Boorman has succeeded in crafting a companion piece to his best film.”  The San Francisco Chronicle said that “every scene is rendered with such authenticity that it’s riveting, almost like it’s a privilege to be stepping back in time.”
