Live-Action IFB Shorts Set to Premiere at this Month’s Galway Film Fleadh

As the 27th Galway Film Fleadh prepares to get underway, we take a look at the live-action shorts which are ready to premiere at this year's event which were funded by the Signatures and Gearrscannáin schemes of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.

Signatures is a short film scheme for the making of live-action, fiction films that act as a proving-ground for Irish creative talents aspiring to write, direct and produce films for the cinema.

Brian Deane's Blight follows a priest who is summoned to a remote Island to help save the life of a young girl who is being tortured by a sinister entity. The short was written by Matthew Roche and produced by Anna O’Malley for TW Films Ltd and stars George Blagden, Alicia Gerrard, Joe Hanley, Marie Ruane, Matthew O'Brien, Tristan Heanue. Watch the trailer

In How Was Your Day? directed by Damien O'Donnell and adapted from a short story by Nollaig Rowan, a woman is excited about the approaching birth of her first child. Prodcued by Emmaline Dowling for Suitable Films Limited, How Was Your Day? stars Eileen Walsh, Seán Duggan, Aidan McArdle, Janet Moran, Eamonn Hunt and Molly McNamara. Watch the trailer

A reflection on the intangible experience of grief, January Hymn sees Clara return home for the first anniversary of her father's death. Written and directed by Katherine Canty, it was produced by Tanja Harney for January Hymn Productions Ltd and stars Niamh Algar, Ally Ni Chiarain and Aisling McLaughlin. Watch the trailer

They Shoot People was directed by Mark Noonan (You're Ugly Too) and stars Lauren Kinsella as Jane, a neglected 12 year-old working in the family shooting range.  She's always been good with guns and one evening at the local carnival she gets a chance to prove it - forever altering the course of her young life. John Keville produced They Shoot People for Savage Production.

The programme also showcases two films made through the Gearrscannáin scheme. Gearrscannáin is a short film scheme to produce Irish language short films that will appeal to a general audience.

Gearrscannáin Maidhm sees an autistic boy's world thrown into chaos as he searches for his mother. Written and directed by Seán Breathnach and produced by Laura Ní Cheallaigh for Magamedia, Maidhm stars Tara Breathnach and Harry Pender. Watch the trailer

Filleadh an Athair was written and directed by Tomasz Woszczynski and sees a man gets out of prison to see his adult daughter. Shame, rejection, trouble with his family and his freedom ensues. Starring Ger Considine, Conor Scott and Emer O'Carroll, Filleadh an Athair was produced by Richard Bolger for Five Knight Films Limited. Watch the trailer
