Review Roundup for Song of the Sea, Released in Irish Cinemas from Today
Released in Irish and UK cinemas today, the Academy Award®-nominated Song of the Sea has garnered widespread acclaim from critics. The film was directed by Tomm Moore and written by Moore and Will Collins.
Following are a highlight of reviews for Song of the Sea:
Empire (5/5) "...like a true folk-storyteller, Moore places his magical beings in the midst of a drama rippling with pan-generational appeal. His saucer-eyed characters are a delight to behold, while the symmetry that runs through so many of his elegantly wrought frames is a constant source of pleasure."
The Irish Times (4/5) "It seems unlikely that a more beautiful film will be released this year."
Entertainment.ie (4/5) “The roiling mix of emotions at work in Song of the Sea is incredible. There's child-like wonder, humour, warmth, bitterness and anguish. It's little wonder that this was nominated for an Oscar.”
RTE Ten (5/5) “It is a true gem of animation, an Irish film of which we can be proud.”
Scannain.ie (4/5) "It’s a joy to let the film envelop you; there is a sincere take on a family unit and the minds of kids – no pop culture, no layered humour, just adventure and wonder."
Film Ireland "Song of the Sea sets itself above countless other children’s films by ably appealing to both kids and much older cinema-goers on so many wonderful levels at once."
The Telegraph (5/5) "Every scene of Tomm Moore's beautifully drawn, Oscar-nominated animation feels like a warm hug at bedtime"
The Guardian (4/5) "Song of the Sea blends Celtic legends, bravura design and animation, and intelligent storytelling that understands but never patronises young viewers, to create an exquisite and rewarding work."
Daily Star “It’s beautiful, touching and refreshingly original.”
Time Out London (4/5) “Perfect for kids, its dazzling craft and sensitive soul should seduce adults too... It feels like a well-worn illustrated children’s book come vividly to life.”
The Skinny (5/5) “Folkloric storytelling on a lavish canvas, it also boasts some of the most astonishing animation in recent memory – every frame could be framed. Moore's film brims with charm, wit, emotion and magic, and should, by all measures, leave you utterly rapt.”
Seattle Times "“Song of the Sea” creates a magical world, one that pulls you in and leaves you, when it’s over, feeling changed by the journey."
The film was produced by Cartoon Saloon, Melusine Productions, The Big Farm, Superprod and Noerlum Studios and was funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, BAI, TG4, Orange, Eurimages, Wallimages, CFB, AFS, DFI, WDFF, Danish Radio, Open Workshop and Haut & Court.
