‘Song of the Sea’ Amongst the Award Winners at this Year’s Galway Film Fleadh

Congratulations to the award winners at the 27th Galway Film Fleadh, which were unveiled at the conclusion of the festival yesterday evening (July 12th). A number of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board-supported productions were amongst the winners at this year’s festival.

The Best Irish Feature Film award was picked up by Cartoon Saloon’s animated feature Song of the Sea. Tomm Moore’s Academy Award®-nominated film has received critical acclaim and is currently on release in Irish cinemas.

The Best Irish First Feature award went to Mark Noonan’s You’re Ugly Too. The film stars Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) as Will, who is released from prison on compassionate leave to care for his niece Stacey (Lauren Kinsella; Albert Nobbs), after the death of her mother. You’re Ugly Too was produced by John Keville and Conor Barry and will be released in cinemas on July 24th.

Older Than Ireland was the winner of the Best Irish Documentary Award. Alex Fegan’s documentary, which explores what it means to have lived one hundred years in Ireland, as seen through the eyes of its oldest citizens, was warmly received at its premiere at the festival on July 10th.

For his work on Simon Fitzmaurice’s My Name is Emily, Seamus Deasy was the winner of the Best Cinematography in an Irish Feature award. The film’s producer, Kathryn Kennedy, was the winner of the Bingham Ray New Talent Award.

Two IFB-funded animated short films were the recipients of awards. Geist, directed by Sean Mullen, Ben Harper and Alex Sherwood, went home with the award for Best Animated Sequence in a Short Film. Tom Caulfield’s Unhinged received the award for Best First Short Animation.
