Mark Noonan's ‘You’re Ugly Too’ Starring Aidan Gillen is Released this Friday, July 24th
You’re Ugly Too, the feature debut of Irish director Mark Noonan, will be released in Irish cinemas this Friday, July 24th. It was filmed on location in counties Offaly and Dublin.
You’re Ugly Too stars Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire) and Lauren Kinsella (Albert Nobbs, Roy). It premiered in February in official selection at the prestigious Berlinale International Film Festival and was recently the winner of the Best Irish First Feature Award at the Galway Film Fleadh. It also screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June.
Gillen stars as Will, who is released from prison on compassionate leave to care for his niece Stacey (Kinsella), after the death of her mother. As they both head into the sleepy Irish midlands and attempt to be a family, they suffer a series of setbacks; Stacey is refused admission to the local school because of her recently developed narcolepsy; Will repeatedly comes close to breaking his prison-ordered curfew; and his attempts at being a father figure to her prove disastrous…
Reviews were strong following the film’s premiere at Berlinale. The Hollywood Reporter noted a “well observed debut for Mark Noonan” and praised the “lovely, unforced performances from Aidan Gillen and Lauren Kinsella”. Cineuropa praised Noonan’s direction: “it feels like there is more happening in what they are not saying or doing than in what they do” and singled out “the wildly talented Kinsella who steals the show.”
You’re Ugly Too was produced by John Keville and Conor Barry for Savage Productions and was written and directed by Mark Noonan. The film was funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
