Cork Film Festival to Host ‘Film at Fitzy’s’ Outdoor Screenings from July 29th to August 3rd
Cork Film Festival will host Film at Fitzy’s, an outdoor screening event from July 29th to August 3rd. The screenings, which will take place on the lawn pavilion of Fitzgerald’s Park, Cork City, include features and shorts funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
July 30th sees a screening of Good Vibrations, the heart-warming and uplifting story of Belfast music legend Terri Hooley, the man responsible for discovering The Undertones and recording Teenage Kicks, giving alternative music a chance to flourish in 1970s Belfast. Directed by Cherrybomb duo Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, the film stars Richard Dormer, Liam Cunningham, Adrian Dunbar, Dylan Moran, Killian Scott, Andrew Simpson, Mark Ryder and Kerr Logan as Fergal Sharkey.
Amhrán na Mara, the Irish language version of the Academy Award®-nominated Song of the Sea screens on Friday July 31st. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, Cartoon Saloon’s animated feature tells the story of the last seal-child, Saoirse, and her brother Ben, who go on an epic journey to save the world of magic and discover the secrets of their past. Amhrán na Mara/Song of the Sea was directed by Tomm Moore and written by Moore and Will Collins.
A number of IFB-funded short films will also screen at the festival. Céad Ghrá will screen prior to the July 29th showing of Amélie. Directed by Brian Deane, Céad Ghrá follows two best-friends who set off on a quest in pursuit of their first crush. Céad Ghrá recently screened at Starbucks coffeehouses across North America as part of the Seattle International Film Festival.
Cutting Grass airs in front of the August 2nd screening of An American Warewolf in London. Taking place during a hot summer, a young inner city boy, Dónal, is trying his hand at cutting lawns for pocket money. However, his luck changes when he meets Gerry. Cutting Grass was written and directed by Ruairí O’Brien and John Kennedy and stars John Hannah.
David Tynan’s Rockmount screens before the August 3rd showing of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Rockmount is a comic dramatisation following the burgeoning football career of an eleven-year old Cork lad named Roy who battles against complacency with his black labrador and uncompromising attitude on the football pitch. Rockmount was the winner of the Best Short Film prize at this year’s IFTA Awards ceremony.
