Irish Documentary ‘A Doctor’s Sword’ will Open in Dublin and Cork this Friday, August 7th
A Doctor’s Sword, a documentary telling the fascinating story of West Cork doctor and atomic bomb survivor Aidan MacCarthy, will open in Cork and Dublin this Friday, August 7th.
University College Cork (UCC) is set to host a gala screening of the documentary on Thursday, August 6th, which will be attended by the filmmakers Gary Lennon and Bob Jackson, Dr MacCarthy’s family, as well as dignitaries including the Japanese Cultural Attaché Mr Yuichi Yamada, the Deputy Head of Mission Mr Kojiro Uchiyama and Senior Defence Official Lt Col Sean Cosden, who will attend on behalf of the American Embassy.
A special opening night screening will take place in Dublin’s Irish Film Institute (IFI) on August 7th with director Gary Lennon, producer Bob Jackson and Aidan McCarthy’s daughter Niki attending a post-screening Q&A (buy tickets here).
A Doctor's Sword provides an incredible insight into the life of Aidan MacCarthy, a UCC trained doctor from West Cork who survived some of the most harrowing episodes of World War II (including the atomic bombing of Nagasaki) and his family's search to uncover the origin of the Japanese Samurai sword, which now resides in MacCarthy's Bar in Castletownbere.
The documentary was produced by Gambit Pictures and funded by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, BAI, UCC, Cork City Council and Cork County Council Arts Office and will be released in Dublin’s IFI and Cork’s Omniplex on Friday, August 7th.
