Three Nominations for ‘Room’ at the Independent Spirit Awards
Congratulations to the team behind the feature film Room, which has received three nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Based on the bestselling novel by Emma Donoghue, who also wrote the screenplay, Room was nominated for Best First Screenplay for Donoghue, Best Female Lead for Brie Larson and Best Editing for Nathan Nugent.
The fifth feature directed by Lenny Abrahamson, Room has attracted great awards attention in recent months since winning the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the festival’s top prize. This week it was revealed that lead actress Brie Larson would receive the Breakthrough Performance Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which will be held in January.
Room tells the extraordinary story of Jack (Jacob Tremblay), a spirited 5 year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson). Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical-they are trapped-confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named "Room."
Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world. Room also stars three-time Academy Award® nominee Joan Allen and Academy Award® nominee William H. Macy.

Room is an Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, in association with Film4, Telefilm Canada, and Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board. A24 distribute the film in the US, and Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada. UTA handled the domestic sale. FilmNation Entertainment handled all international sales.
The Independent Spirit Awards take place annually in Santa Monica, California and was the first event to exclusively honour independent cinema.
