John Carney’s ‘Sing Street’ to Open the 2016 Audi Dublin International Film Festival
Sing Street, the upcoming musical from writer and director John Carney (Once, Begin Again), has been chosen as the opening film for the 2016 Audi Dublin International Film Festival.
Sing Street takes us back to 1980s Dublin where the recession forces 14-year-old Cosmo out of his comfortable private school and into survival mode at the inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He turns to music and forms a ragtag band, shooting scrappy music videos, and finding refuge and love with the beautiful 16-year-old Raphina.
Sing Street stars Ferdia Walsh- Peelo, Lucy Boynton, Jack Reynor, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Aidan Gillen.
Speaking of the selection, festival organiser Gráinne Humphreys said: “Sing Street is possibly the most perfect film with which to open a Dublin festival. A beautiful valentine to Dublin, John Carney’s nostalgic celebration of 80s music will cause a sensation. John wowed festival-goers in 2007, with Once winning the Audience Award, and we’re delighted to welcome him back to open the 2016 Audi Dublin International Film Festival.”
Writer and director John Carney said: “I'm excited to have Sing Street premiere at the Festival. “The film loosely charts my own experiences as a skinny kid in a pretty rough and tumble school in the mid 80s in Dublin. I invite any of the school bullies from back then (teachers included), to the screening, where I will publicly fight them.”
Sing Street will have its world premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January and will be released in Irish cinemas on March 18th.
The 2016 Audi Dublin International Film Festival takes place from February 18th to 28th and the full lineup will be revealed in January.
