Congratulations to the BAFTA Nominees for Irish Films ‘Brooklyn’, ‘Room’ and ‘The Lobster’
Congratulations to the nominees from Irish films Brooklyn, Room and The Lobster, which have gathered nine nominations at the 2016 BAFTA Film Awards. The three films each received funding from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.
Brooklyn was nominated in six categories – Outstanding British Film, Leading Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Supporting Actress for Julie Walters, Adapted Screenplay for Nick Hornby for his adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair.
Room was nominated in two categories – Leading Actress for Brie Larson and Adapted Screenplay for Emma Donoghue’s adaptation of her own novel. Brie Larson has also been nominated for the EE Rising Star award, voted for by the public.
In addition, The Lobster has received a nomination in the category of Outstanding British Film.
Irish talent at the awards is also represented by Michael Fassbender, who has been nominated for Leading Actor for his performance in Steve Jobs. Northern Irish director Stephen Fingleton has been nominated for Outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for his feature The Survivalist.
Speaking on the nominations, IFB CEO James Hickey commented: “The momentum of Irish film at international award ceremonies has grown substantially in recent months, with the BAFTA nominations adding to this. Along with four nominations at this weekend’s Golden Globe awards, the IFB are delighted that our continuing support for Irish creative talent has had such positive outcomes in 2016. Congratulations to all the nominees and I wish them the best of luck in the weeks ahead.”
The 2016 BAFTA awards will take place in London on February 14th.
About 'BROOKLYN'
John Crowley's Brooklyn was produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey and executive produced by Alan Moloney. Production companies were Parallel Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Wildgaze Films and Item 7. It was financed by the IFB, BAI, RTÉ, BBC, Telefilm, SODEC and the BFI. Brooklyn is currently on release in the UK and Ireland via Lionsgate. It is also on release in the US through Fox Searchlight. Brooklyn was acquired at the Sundance Film Festival by Fox Searchlight for all international territories. International sales were handled by Hanway.
About 'ROOM'
Room was directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Element Pictures' Ed Guiney produced the film with David Gross. Executive producers are Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures and Jeff Arkuss and Jesse Shapira for No Trace Camping. Emma Donoghue, Rose Garnett (Film 4), Tessa Ross (Film 4), and David Kosse (Film 4) also serve as executive producers. Room is an Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, in association with Film4, Telefilm Canada, and Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board. A24 distribute Room in the US, and Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada. UTA handled the domestic sale of Room and FilmNation Entertainment handled international sales. Room will be on release in Irish cinemas on January 15th.
Room was the winner of the People's Choice award at the Toronto International Film Festival 2015.

The Lobster is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou and produced by Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Ceci Dempsey and Yorgos Lanthimos.
