Irish Film Talent Making Waves Internationally


Irish film talent have been turning heads internationally in recent weeks, with top prizes at Cannes for the work of cinematographer Robbie Ryan, box office success for Fergal Reilly's The Angry Birds Movie and high praise from the critics for Ruth Negga's performance in Loving.

This year's Cannes prize giving ceremony saw two accolades for cinematographer Robbie Ryan. He worked on Ken Loach's Palme d'Or winning I, Daniel Blake and Andrea Arnold's Jury Prize winner American Honey. A graduate of IADT, Ryan has previously worked on IFB projects The Summit by Nick Ryan and Billy O'Brien's I Am Not a Serial Killer.

The Angry Birds Movie, co-directed by Louth born Fergal Reilly earned over $38m in its opening weekend in the US, topping the box office charts there. The film has taken over $150 million worldwide. A graduate of IADT, Reilly directed the film with Clay Kaytis.

Ruth Negga's performance in Loving was applauded by critics when the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Limerick raised Negga, a Trinity College Drama graduate, featured in IFB projects Stars and Breakfast on Pluto.

Dublin born Catriona Balfe joined George Clooney and Julia Roberts on the red carpet for the premiere of their new film Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster. Catriona also features in Mary McGuckian's The Price of Desire, the Eileen Gray biopic which is on limited release in Ireland this Friday.
