CELEBRATION OF IRISH SHORT FILMS FOR SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) are delighted to sponsor a special screening of short films to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge which runs from the 5th - 17th March.

Following on from the success of last year’s screening which played to a full house, this year the event takes place this Saturday 12th March in the Town Hall Theatre at 3pm. It is an opportunity to see the Galway premiere of a number of highly entertaining short films, including the award winning FLUENT DYSPHASIA, directed by Daniel O’Hara, the talented director behind the critically acclaimed YU MING IS AINM DOM. The film stars Stephen Rea and tells the humorous story of a man who wakes up one day, mysteriously speaking perfect Irish - which he never could before - and having forgotten how to speak English.

Others films which will be screening include the animated story CUILIN DULACH, who was born with his head on backwards and has been shunned and mocked by all but his loving Mother. Then one day, he discovers he can do something better than anyone else. CUILIN DULACH was produced by Cartoon Saloon and directed by Nora Toomey.

Produced by Expresso Films Hugh Farley’s AN DIOGE IS FAIDE tells the true story of a farm labourer, Sonnie Murphy, who gets the chance to compete in the steeplechase in the Los Angeles 1932 Olympics. IDIR DHA CHOMHAIRLE, a story about a young woman whose past comes back to haunt her and has a devastating effect those she loves, directed by Mary Crumlish and produced by Hilary O’Donovan and last years Oscailt film CIORCAL, directed by Collette Cullen and produced by great Western Films, complete the screening.

All of these short films were commissioned under Oscailt the Irish language short film scheme which aims to encourage new talent in all areas of Irish language film production. Oscailt is co-funded by TG4 and BSÉ/IFB.

The new deadline for 2006 Oscailt applications is Friday July 15. For more details on how to apply to make an Oscailt short film visit www.filmboard.ie or contact Jill McGregor at Jill@filmboard.ie.

Saturday 12th March 3pm in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway. Tickets cost €5. Running time: 70 minutes
