I Am Not A Serial Killer Nominated for 3 BIFA Awards
The 2016 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) nominations have been announced with Billy O'Brien's Irish film I Am Not A Serial Killer receiving nominations for three major awards, including Best Screenplay for Billy O'Brien and Chris Hyde, Best Actor for Max Records and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Lloyd.
Now in its 18th year, BIFA celebrates the most creative and innovative works in independent filmmaking. The announcement of I Am Not A Serial Killer's BIFA nominations comes after a particularly fruitful year for Irish film at last year's ceremony, where Saoirse Ronan walked away with the Best Actress award for Brooklyn, Olivia Colman was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Lobster, and Lenny Abrahamson's Room won Best International Independent Film.
Adapted by O'Brien and Hyde from Dan Wells' novel of the same name, I Am Not A Serial Killer is set in Clayton, a small mid-west town and tells the story of John Wayne Cleaver, a 16-year-old boy with an obsession for serial killers. Driven by a frenetic desire to resist his own inner demons, John - played by Max Records - enters dangerous territory when he risks breaking his own rules as he sets out to trap a serial killer, in an attempt not to become one himself.
Starring alongside Records in the film is prolific actor Christopher Lloyd, who plays Crowley; John's elderly neighbour. Records and Lloyd join an acclaimed list of nominees for the 2016 BIFAs, competing against the likes of Michael Fassbender (Tresspass Against Us) and Jamie Dornan (Anthropoid) in their respective categories.
Produced by Floodland Pictures in Ireland and Tea Shop & Film Company in the UK with funding from the Irish Film Board, O'Brien and Hyde's screenplay examines the complex and nuanced layers that lurk and loom within the human psyche. The 2016 British Independent Film Awards will take place on Sunday, 4 December at Old Billingsgate, where winners will be announced after being selected by a jury of leading industry professionals.
