Continued success for Irish film as London Critics’ Circle Award nominations are announced

Following the news that Irish film talent received four Golden Globe nominations last week, the success stories continue as Irish film Sing Street and Irish co-production, Love & Friendship lead the nominations for the London Critics’ Circle Awards, taking place on Sunday, 22 January.

Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship is nominated for both Film of the Year and British/Irish Film of the Year, while Whit Stillman received a nod for Screenwriter of the Year. Kate Beckinsale, who plays Lady Susan Vernon in Stillman’s film will compete for overall Actress of the Year and British/Irish Actress of the Year. Tom Bennett also received a nomination in two categories—Supporting Actor and British/Irish Actor of the Year.

John Carney’s Sing Street was also recognised, gaining three nominations including a nod for British/Irish Film of the Year and Technical Achievement of the Year. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo is also nominated for Young British/Irish Performer of the Year.

Ruth Negga will compete alongside Beckinsale for British/Irish Actress of the Year following her Best Actress Golden Globe nomination for her turn as Mildred Loving in Jeff Nichols’ Loving. Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan is nominated for Technical Achievement of the Year for his work on American Honey.

The prominence of Irish film talent at the London Critics’ Circle Awards marks another successful start to the awards season as IFB films, Sing Street and The Lobster received major Golden Globe nominations. Directed by John Carney, Sing Street is nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy/Musical while Colin Farrell will compete for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy/Musical for his portrayal of the lonely David in Yorgos Lanthios’ The Lobster. Irish actress Catriona Balfe is nominated for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama for Outlander.

In other news, two separate film critics referred to A Date for Mad Mary and The Young Offenders as two "undiscovered gems" of 2016. 

The Golden Globes will take place in LA on 8 January and the London Critics’ Circle Awards will be held in London on 22 January.
