Irish Screenwriters Awarded in Cannes

Irish screenwriters Brian O’Malley and Terry McMahon havereceived a prestigious script award at the Cannes Film Festival. O'Malley and McMahon were awarded the sixteenth annual Hartley-Merril Prize for International Screenwriting for their screenplay Sisk at a reception on the Cannes Croisette on Saturday afternoon.

Sisk was the winner of the Irish Film Institute’s fourth annual Tiernan MacBride International Screenwriting Award. The script tells the story of a dying ex-gangster who returns home to atone for his sins, but is dragged into a bloody slaughter between the Irish and Chinese.

Both writers will receive a cash prize, and will be honoured at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles on 23rd June in front of an invited audience. While in LA the winners will get to develop their script with top screenwriters, as well as attend a number of individual meetings with key industry professionals.
