The Blaxorcist wins Melies d'Argent competition at Espoo Cine Film Festival

The Irish short film The Blaxorcist, which was written and directed by Edward King has won the Espoo Cine Melies d'Argent Best Short Film competition in Finland and is now nominated for the Golden Melies D'or competition in Lund, Sweden next month.

The Blaxorcist is a comedy about a black priest who is called upon to perform an exorcism on a young white girl whose soul has been possessed by soul. The Espoo Cine Melies d'Argent jury described the short as ‘a six-minute soul exorcist, a funny, compact film and a fresh exception within the horror film genre.'

The short which was produced by Conor McMahon and Three Way Productions as part of the Irish Film Board's Short Shorts scheme aims to stimulate imaginative, cinematic work that can achieve high impact in minimal screentime. The Blaxorcist premiered at this year's Galway Film Fleadh and has also been selected for the Best First Short competition at the Dingle Film Festival.

There have been a number of successes for other Irish shorts recently including Blind Man's Eye directed by Matthew Talbot-Kelly being selected to screen at the internationally renowned 64th Venice Film Festival and the award winning Teeth being selected to open in cinemas nationwide in front of feature film Hallam Foe from August 31st.

The Espoo Cine Film Festival, which is in its 18th year, takes place from 21st - 26th August.
