IFB Funded Shorts Win at 52nd Corona Cork Film Festival
The 52nd Corona Cork Film Festival was a great success with four shorts funded by Bord Scannan na hEireann/ the Irish Film Board (IFB) winning awards.
The Absolut Award for Best Irish Short Film went to Darren Thorton for his film FRANKIE. The short, which was produced by Calipo Picture Company and funded through the IFB and RTE's Short Cuts scheme tells the tale about a 15-year-old preparing for fatherhood. The jury felt Thornton's work demonstrated a perceptive empathy with human frailty and was an impressive accomplishment in filmmaking. FRANKIE also received a Special Mention in the PrixUIP Cork Best European Short Film category.
Other winners at the festival were Cathal Watters with his short ROLLA SAOR which scooped the Gradam Gael Linn for Best Irish Language Short Film and Peter Foott with AN CREATUR which picked up the Audience Award for Best Irish Short Film. ROLLA SAOR was produced by Fastnet Films and AN CREATUR was produced by Vico Films. Both shorts were funded through the IFB and TG4 Oscailt scheme which premiered at the festival.
Finally, the Audience Award for Best International Short Film went to NEW BOY which was directed by Steph Green and produced by Zanzibar Films. NEW BOY premiered earlier this year at the Galway Film Fleadh as part of the Short Cuts scheme.
